Cobbs, D. Coffin, E. Hanley, E. Gagliardi, N. Greymorning, S. LeBihan, D. Parsons, K. Sugden N. Vonessen Ex-Officio Present: B. French Members Excused: C. Anderson, H. Arens, M. Hendrix, J. Hickman, N. Lindsay J. Iverson, B. Holzworth, V. Hopkins, S. LeBihan,T. Morgan Guest: J. Randall The minutes from 3/12/19 were approved after communication. Communication Guests from Irish Studies will join the committee on April 9th to discuss the potential move to the newly named World Languages and Culture Department. James Randall, Chair of the General Education Committee joined the meeting to provide a summary of the efforts on the UM Core Pilot and ask for feedback on the draft model. Members were provided with the HYPERLINK "https://umt.box.com/s/mmvho8nih390tkkp9bpgbctli7avhhl0" slides from the Open Forum prior to the meeting. The current thinking is that 32 credits, or of the credits for a degree is the correct size for general education. The interdisciplinary courses are the biggest change from the distribution approach. There are still significant concerns about how the changes will effect student credit hours (SCH) even though the administration indicates the SCH for the core should be neutral. Many professional programs (extended majors) have general education embedded in their curriculum. Units will need to rethink their curriculum and this will involve a lot of work when everyone is feeling the pain of loss faculty and staff. The Provost is interested in considering how crosslisting might be allowed and OCHE is opening the discussion. Concern was expressed at the form about losing introductory courses that introduce students to majors. The Interdisciplinary core will need to be carefully developed so students are introduced to wide variety of disciplines by introducing themes and problems that are resolved with collaborative efforts. The upper-division interdisciplinary course could focus on individual contributions to resolving problems. Some members cautioned that the UM Core should not require an upper-division course in the students junior or senior year. There were concerns about how the basic skills and breadth of knowledge courses map to the MUS Core and how transfer students would be effected by a new program. There should be efforts to build community with transfer students in addition to freshman. A lot of programs are doing their own version of the freshman seminar, but we need to ensure all students receive a community building experience that introduces them to campus resources and academic thinking. Student members expressed the desire to simplify the general education program and give students more freedom to take courses outside their major. Professor Coffin suggested the Committee consider stackable credentials or tiered system so students would have proof of skills for employment if unable to complete the degree. Feedback from the forum suggested the Committee review HYPERLINK "https://undergrad.stanford.edu/about/vpue-opportunities-students" Stanfords approach to general education. When the draft model is presented to the Faculty Senate in April it will include a request to administration to resolve crosslisting and funding, so the SCH fear can be alleviated. Faculty will need incentives to develop courses. Programs are operating with reduced faculty and can only teach minimum courses for their majors. The General Education Committee will be communicating with departments to ask how the draft model will map to their programs. It would be helpful to have a diagram of how it will map to the MUS Core and transition from the current program as well. The hope is to start the UM Core Pilot by fall 2020. The HYPERLINK "http://www.umt.edu/withdrawal/" withdrawal website went live this week. Business Items The Interim Assessment of WGS and the Montana Pathways presentation were postponed due to absences. The revision to policy 201.30 to include additional language regarding affected programs was postponed. If a program chair is added to the e-curr form as an affected program then approval is required for the form to move forward. ASCRC is not certain the affected programs should have this authority. It may consider additional clarification so that evidence of consultation is uploaded into the form, but the affected program does not have to approve the form. The issue may be tabled until we know whether new curriculum development software will be implemented over the summer. Professor Coffin presented the Data Review Procedure (Student Success Subcommittee) that was drafted by the Subcommittee in collaboration with Vice Provost Swager. Many members thought the draft overstepped the purview of ASCRC and adds a layer of bureaucracy / micro-managing. Academic units should be assessing their students data and identifying issues that need to be addressed. ASCRC should not duplicate efforts. ASCRC might want to review the performance data on courses to identify areas where students need additional support. The Data Office is close to publishing the Data Dash Board which will include data that is verified by the academic deans. ASCRC could look at the data that is available, rather than requiring additional reporting. The Law School completed exit interviews with its students with the intent of making changes to retain students. Students had to meet with the Dean of Students to apply for graduation. Registrars Office request review of unclear (non- programmable) catalog language. A few examples were available on the agenda. The item was postponed since there was not a representative from the Registrars Office at the meeting. ASCRC thought perhaps guidelines for items that could be petitioned to waive requirements may be needed. Director French would like ASCRC to consider common deadlines for reinstatement. Students are confused and advisors would like some guidelines to help them with students. It was suggested a draft motion with catalog language be presented to Committee for consideration after spring break. Good and Welfare Chair Cobbs wished everyone a happy spring break. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 3:30 p.m. "#'(*+89I_ukd`QCh lwCJOJQJ^JaJh lw6CJOJQJ^JaJhr_ huhr_h+OJQJ^JhvAOJQJ^Jh9,OJQJ^JhOJQJ^Jh hjOJQJ^Jh hOJQJ^Jh hj5OJQJ^J h$b0J*h9,hTU0J* hM P0J* h@0J* h]0J* h?0J* h[}60J*h9,hp0J* hp0J*h9,hr_0J*+9\ n o U lFVgd9 & F 80`0gdp^gdp & F 8^gdpgd( & F 80`0gd<gd lwgd9, $ a$gdj_ij E F Q ^ m n o гᔐ{m_Q@ hYh!,CJOJQJ^JaJh@CJOJQJ^JaJh9?fCJOJQJ^JaJh]CJOJQJ^JaJh9CJOJQJ^JaJ h lwh lwh lwh)2CJOJQJ^JaJ h<h lwCJOJQJ^JaJh~CJOJQJ^JaJh lw6CJOJQJ^JaJ h~h~CJOJQJ^JaJh lwCJOJQJ^JaJ h~h lwCJOJQJ^JaJ S T U # $ h °q_QӃQ?#jh9CJOJQJU^JaJh/CJOJQJ^JaJ#h/h/CJH*OJQJ^JaJ#h/h`"CJH*OJQJ^JaJ h/h/CJOJQJ^JaJ h/h`"CJOJQJ^JaJh( huh=#hYhj5CJOJQJ^JaJ hYh{CJOJQJ^JaJh9CJOJQJ^JaJ hYhJ4CJOJQJ^JaJhJCJOJQJ^JaJh i j p q C$%,=طqqcUqC5h^.CJOJQJ^JaJ#jh^.CJOJQJU^JaJhv_CJOJQJ^JaJhULCJOJQJ^JaJh}'CJOJQJ^JaJh!CJOJQJ^JaJh%CJOJQJ^JaJh{BCJOJQJ^JaJh9CJOJQJ^JaJh/CJOJQJ^JaJ$h9h/0JCJOJQJ^JaJ#jh9CJOJQJU^JaJ)jh9CJOJQJU^JaJ=>?-.طvѳ*S*Y(phf3jj yH Table Grid7:V02!2 style1 style1B^2B D_0 Normal (Web)dd[$\$./A.
